Tilia americana
American Basswood

  • American Basswood, also called the American Linden, is a larger tree than its European cousin, the Linden. But its early summer flowers are just as fragrant. They’re beloved by bees and make excellent honey.

  • Tolerant of a variety of soil conditions, including heavy clays and drought, but sensitive to soil compaction. Grows best in moist, fertile soil. Unfortunately not as tolerant of urban conditions as its more commonly planted European cousin.

  • Inner bark can be easily stripped and woven into strong ropes and baskets.

  • Young, heart-shaped leaves are mild and tender and make a nice salad or soup.

  • In winter, trees can be tapped like maples to harvest the sweet sap.
