Urban Agriculture / Horticulture Assistant Internship
Position Description: The Civic Garden Center (CGC) Urban Agriculture / Horticulture Assistant internship is four-month part-time paid position ($17.00/hour). We are seeking an energetic and passionate intern to work alongside the Urban Agriculture Coordinator and Horticulturist. This intern will assist in maintenance of Market and Backyard Gardens and aid in material distribution and educate the public on applying regenerative agriculture methods. This position will be responsible for maintaining the irrigation systems throughout the CGC’s Hauck Botanical Garden, an eight-acre public garden space. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to gain experience in the horticulture field or for someone who would enjoy working independently in a peaceful natural setting.
Responsibilities & Requirements:
Assist Urban Agriculture Coordinator in maintaining and supporting participants in the CGC’s Backyard Gardens Program by conducting site visits and consultations for participants
Work with Urban Agriculture Coordinator and Horticulturist to implement CGC Irrigation Procedure, ensuring all garden areas are adequately watered at Hauck Botanic Garden and Market Garden
Assist Urban Agriculture Coordinator by monitoring soil health, water usage, cultivation, harvesting and implementing organic pest/disease controls
Fulfill harvest lists and carry out post-harvest procedures
Be responsible for hand-watering and regularly fertilizing CGC annual planters located throughout the property
Be responsible for the proper watering, weeding and pruning of plants being propagated in the CGC’s hoop house with guidance from Horticulturist
Maintain a safe work environment through the proper use and care of tools and irrigation equipment
Be available to work weekends on a regular basis
Qualifications: Tasks are varied and the growing season can be unpredictable; intern must be comfortable with a flexible workflow. Intern reports to both Urban Agriculture Coordinator and Horticulturist and will split time between them. Intern must have a general knowledge of both agriculture and horticulture, willingness to learn and follow directions, and the ability to perform physical labor safely in an outdoor environment. Must be self-motivated, focused and able to work independently. Must be able to arrange own transportation to job site. Employment is contingent upon the successful passage of a background check.
Physical Requirements: This is a hands-on working position. Intern must tolerate heat and be able to work outside for extended periods of time in various weather conditions. Must be able to lift and move at least fifty pounds without mechanical assistance and to stand bend, stoop, kneel, etc. for extended periods of time.

Urban Agriculture Assistant Internship
Position Description: The Civic Garden Center (CGC) Urban Agriculture Assistant internship is a 25-week part-time paid position ($15.00/hour). Working alongside the Urban Agriculture Coordinator and Program Associate, this intern will assist in the build-out of the Market and Backyard Gardens and aid in material distribution and educate the public on applying regenerative agriculture methods and general horticultural techniques in an urban setting. This position will work in several community gardens, cofacilitating outdoor gardening classes and volunteer workdays and performing garden maintenance.
Responsibilities & Requirements:
Contribute to the development of practical education materials for summer programming
Assist Urban Agriculture Coordinator and Program Associate in the preparation and facilitation of summer programming
Conduct site visits and consultations for community garden workdays
Co-facilitate community garden workdays
Maintain a safe work environment through the proper use and care of tools and equipment
Be available to work nights and weekends on a regular basis
Understand the mission of the CGC and its role in local agriculture systems
Qualifications: Tasks are varied and the growing season can be unpredictable; intern must be comfortable with a flexible workflow. Intern reports to both Urban Agriculture Coordinator and Program Associate and will split time between them. Intern must have a general knowledge of or interest in edible plants. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be self-motivated and focused. Public speaking and conflict resolution skills are recommended. Must be able to arrange own transportation to job site. Employment is contingent upon the successful passage of a background check.
