Sanguinaria canadensis
Bloodroot
A spring ephemeral with small white flowers and red sap in its root.
It’s a small plant, only 6 inches tall, and grows best in full shade and moist, rich soil.
In ideal conditions it will spread over time to form large colonies.
Like most ephemerals, it goes dormant in summer.
Bloodroot has special relationships with early season pollinators and its seeds are dispersed by ants.
