Rudbeckia laciniata
Cutleaf Coneflower
The distinctive leaves of this tall native perennial are known as sochan by the Cherokee people, who harvest it as a staple green in spring.
In mid-summer, it produces lanky yellow flowers, followed by ornamental seedheads that are eaten by goldfinches.
Grows best in full sun and well-drained soil and will spread aggressively through underground stems.
Well adapted to heat and humidity.
Drought tolerant and deer resistant.
