Phytolacca americana
Pokeberry

  • A dramatic native perennial that is often treated as a weed by home gardeners.

  • Pokeberry grows up to 10 feet tall on sturdy magenta stems and bears panicles of white flowers that become dark purple berries in late summer. Although these berries are beloved by birds, they are poisonous to humans.

  • Does well in a variety of site conditions.

  • Horticulturist’s Notes: Although pokeberry often shows up where it isn’t wanted, allowing a few plants to grow can create a beautiful and dramatic backdrop to a naturalized flower bed. Cut to the ground after frost.
