Lindera benzoin
Spicebush
This fast-growing, medium sized shrub produces small yellow flowers in spring and yellow foliage and shiny red berries in fall.
It grows well in partially shaded sites and was once the most common shrub in Ohio’s forest understory.
Spicebush berries have a warm peppery flavor and make an excellent seasoning for both sweet and savory dishes.
The leaves can be brewed into tea.
Essential oils from all parts of the plant have a pleasant fragrance.
Horticulturist’s Notes: Spicebush has a special relationship with the Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly. Look for folded-over leaves—there may be a caterpillar hiding inside!
