Lindera benzoin
Spicebush

  • This fast-growing, medium sized shrub produces small yellow flowers in spring and yellow foliage and shiny red berries in fall.

  • It grows well in partially shaded sites and was once the most common shrub in Ohio’s forest understory.

  • Spicebush berries have a warm peppery flavor and make an excellent seasoning for both sweet and savory dishes.

  • The leaves can be brewed into tea.

  • Essential oils from all parts of the plant have a pleasant fragrance.

  • Horticulturist’s Notes: Spicebush has a special relationship with the Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly. Look for folded-over leaves—there may be a caterpillar hiding inside!
