Plant pressing is more than just a creative hobby—it’s a way to document, appreciate and preserve the rich biodiversity that surrounds us; to connect with nature, slow down and truly observe the intricate details of plants that often go unnoticed. By learning how to press plants, we can foster a deeper connection with local ecosystems and contribute to a greater understanding of plant life.
In this introductory workshop, you'll learn the fundamentals of plant preservation while getting hands-on experience in the field! We'll explore the history and purpose of plant pressing, the CGC's Community Herbarium, ethical foraging and collection methods, and tips for at-home pressing and future herbarium projects. You'll also get hands-on experience both collecting and pressing plants. Then, guided by examples and demonstrations, you'll use the supplies, materials and pressed flowers provided to design your own unique pressed-flower layout to take home.
This class is perfect for beginners who love nature, art or science and want to learn how to preserve plants as well as anyone interested in starting their own herbarium collection. No prior experience is needed. We hope you'll leave feeling more connected to nature and inspired to explore and collect plants more intentionally!
MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: CGC Environmental Education Specialist Luis Aguilar-Dwyer has been pressing plants since 2018, with a focus on prairie ecology and Texas wildflowers. His passion for botanical preservation began in Houston, where he developed a deep appreciation for native plant species and their ecosystems. Inspired by visits to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, he has continued to refine his plant-pressing techniques and expand his knowledge. Luis has also explored Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Denali National Parks, where he pressed wildflowers alongside experienced park rangers and deepened his understanding of conservation. His goal is to connect with more naturalists and elevate the world of plant preservation, inspiring others to see the beauty in plants and the importance of their conservation. He is currently piloting the CGC’s Community Herbarium.
