Cercis canadensis
Eastern Redbud
A small tree that adapts well to sun or shade, Eastern Redbud produces dramatic fuchsia flowers in early spring and black bean-like pods the persist through the winter.
It seeds readily throughout the woods and garden and can grow even in challenging and infertile conditions.
Deer resistant.
Flowers are edible, sweet and crisp. Young seedpods can be harvested and eaten raw in salads or sliced and added to stir-fry. They have a tart yet sweet pea-like flavor.
Horticulturist’s Notes: Redbuds have a special relationship with native carpenter bees. The bees emerge at the same time in spring as the flowers begin to bloom!
