Cercis canadensis
Eastern Redbud

  • A small tree that adapts well to sun or shade, Eastern Redbud produces dramatic fuchsia flowers in early spring and black bean-like pods the persist through the winter.

  • It seeds readily throughout the woods and garden and can grow even in challenging and infertile conditions.

  • Deer resistant.

  • Flowers are edible, sweet and crisp. Young seedpods can be harvested and eaten raw in salads or sliced and added to stir-fry. They have a tart yet sweet pea-like flavor.

  • Horticulturist’s Notes: Redbuds have a special relationship with native carpenter bees. The bees emerge at the same time in spring as the flowers begin to bloom!
