Tomatopaedia!

  • The Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati 2715 Reading Road Cincinnati United States (map)

During our Tomatopaedia class, Ben, our tomato expert will give tips on how to successfully grow tomatoes from seed, in containers, fertilizer, and the proper soil mixture. He will demonstrate how to transplant a tomato plant and at the end of the event, you will take home a tomato plant to successfully grow using all of his tips and tricks.

A gardener since his childhood Victory Garden during WW2, Ben is a tomato enthusiast. He has 50+ plants in his Clifton home garden, most or all he has grown from seed. They include cherry, grape, and slicer varieties, heirlooms, and hybrids. Many go from vine to freezer, to become paste or sauce during the winter. Others are eaten fresh or shared.

He also helped introduce and popularize heirloom tomatoes through hundreds of seedlings he donated to the Civic Garden Center's annual Spring sale. His only failure was getting Volunteer of the Year award for his portable generator, omnipresent for years at neighborhood garden-raised bed construction sites.
