Description: The “Building Community” award is designed to recognize individuals in the Greater Cincinnati area whose life and/or work exemplifies the mission of the Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati to build community through gardening, education, and environmental stewardship. This is an annual award, and will normally be presented at a special event held in late winter/early spring. Honorees will receive a special gift and be featured in the CGC newsletter. Proceeds from the event will be added to the CGC unrestricted endowment which supports CGC’s core programs.
Scott Beuerlein is the Manager of Botanical Garden Outreach at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, where he is involved in plant trialing, the Zoo’s Best Plants for Pollinators Program, and education programs. Scott is the past Chair of CGC’s Rare Plant Auction. A self-professed plant-aholic and tree geek, Scott’s obsessed with the positive impact more and better horticulture can play in all people’s lives. Scott is the Founding Chair of Taking Root and the current Chair of the Boone County Arboretum Collections Committee. He also writes the Deeper Roots column for Horticulture Magazine, is a Partner in the influential and highly respected Garden Rant blogsite, and writes the Only in Ohio column for Ohio Gardener Magazine.
As the recently retired Cincinnati Parks’ Land Management and Urban Forestry Manager, Dave managed 5000 acres of park forests and 85,000 public street trees for the Cincinnati Park Board. He is a member of International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist and has been recognized as an International Expert on urban forestry and park maintenance by USAID. Dave was the first urban forester to be inducted into Ohio’s Forest of Honor in recognition of his significant contributions to the advancement of forestry in our city and across the state.
Dave and Scott’s passion for the environment has spanned decades, and over the years they’ve inspired many of us at CGC. The Building Community award is fitting recognition for their tireless efforts to educate our community about its plants and trees, conservation, and sustainability.
