Green Girls in STEM Program

Green Girls in STEM

Women have made great strides in the workforce over the past 50 years but are still underrepresented in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). In response, the Civic Garden Center created “Green Girls in STEM” – an immersive hands-on program for young women in high school to explore STEM careers, sustainability, and leadership development. Green Girls in STEM provides experiences that leave students feeling more connected to nature, their communities, and the wider world.

Are you a high school girl looking for experiences to help you figure out what career path you will enjoy? Are you fascinated by how things work (in nature or of human design)? Are you interested in learning about environmental issues and how you can make a difference? If so, join us for programming to explore careers, technologies and design processes related to environmental challenges our region is facing.

Throughout the year-long program, participants will be engaged by:

  • Ongoing contact from the Project Manager, for both personal encouragement and to aid in finding opportunities to share the information learned with participants’ larger school communities.
  • Ongoing contact with a female mentor(s) in a STEM related career.
  • Participation in “lunch and learn” sessions throughout the year. *Note – these will be in a virtual format for the time being

Dates: While our programming is typically in-person, we have migrated to a virtual format due to COVID-19. Participants will meet virtually once a week throughout the summer of 2021 starting the first week of June for 1-1.5 hours each session. There will be 2-3 optional in-person sessions offered during the summer focused on stream ecology and habitat restoration. In-person sessions will be held outdoors and follow COVID-19 safety protocols. Participants will continue to meet once a month throughout the school year. Sessions are scheduled on an ongoing basis based on availability of group participants.
