Get in on the Mushrooms!

Garden fans, you’re in for a treat! We offer lots of classes on plants of all kinds at the Civic Garden Center, but this Saturday (4/27 from 9am-11) we’ve got a mushroom aficionado joining us for a hands-on session! Romain Picasso has trained with the master of mycology himself, Paul Stamets. Stamets is known for his pioneering work in using mushrooms for filtration, cleaning up toxic waste, and much more.

This workshop will examine mushroom cultivation from a permaculture design perspective, helping us form a better understanding of how mushrooms can be used to enhance the productivity and ecological health of our cultivated systems. If your veggie gardening efforts have been frustrated by a heavily-shaded yard, your food production dreams can still come true!winecap mushrooms
We will begin indoors for a brief background session and then move outside for the hands-on portion of the day, which will include a demonstration of shitake log cultivation and constructing a bed of delicious winecap stropharia “garden giant” mushrooms in our own Hauck Botanical Garden! This will be great background for Romain’s next class on mushroom cultivation and propagation (Saturday June 1st from 9am-11). Check out our calendar of events for more details and to register for one or both of his exciting classes!
