Treeforestation: Invasive Plants & Native Replacements

Tuesday, October 29th, 6-7:30pm

Instructor: Greg Torres, CGC Horticulturist

Cost: $15 (free for CGC volunteers)

Want to learn more about our Treeforestation project and the importance of preserving our native ecosystems? Join CGC horticulturist, Greg Torres, for this class all about invasive removal and native replacements. We kicked off a new project at the CGC last year: Treeforestation. Many of Cincinnati’s green spaces are overrun with invasive plants. As more and more ash trees come down, thinning our tree canopy, there is increasingly more room for invasive species (Japanese honeysuckle, Japanese knotweed, Garlic Mustard) to expand and exclude our native plants and animals. We started this reforestation project to save and protect Cincinnati’s green spaces. We’ve been having monthly workdays at tour first Treeforestation site, Walnut Woods, clearing it of invasive plants, paving a trail through it, with first planting of native plants scheduled for October 26th.

Saturday, November 9th, 10am-12pm

Instructor: Carisa Hund-Bunten

Cost: $20

In this hands on tincture workshop participants will hone their nature harnessing skills while making and taking their own tincture. Learn about what defines a true tincture as well as the differences between an essence, extract, infusion, and glyceride. The approach of the instruction is based on folk methods and casual empowerment. After this D.I.Y. you will know how to stock an herbal apothecary of your very own.

Plant Adaptations

Tuesday, November 19th, 6-7:30pm

Instructor: Greg Torres, CGC Horticulturist

Cost: $15 (free for CGC volunteers)

The intention of this presentation is to introduce several broad concepts about plants so that the audience can understand the deep historical connections between plants and animals. Topics including species biogeography, pollination syndromes and seed dispersal syndromes as well as evolutionary anachronisms in our local forests are sure to leave the listener thinking in a different way about our native ecology.
