Treeforestation Workday @ Walnut Woods
Aug 24 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Sign up to volunteer for our next Treeforestation workday!

Many of Cincinnati’s green spaces are overrun with invasive plants. As more and more ash trees come down, thinning our tree canopy, there is increasingly more room for invasive species (Japanese honeysuckle, Japanese knotweed, Garlic Mustard) to take over and exclude our native plants and animals. Therefore, rather than having our Christmas Tree Sale, we are kicking off this reforestation project to save and protect Cincinnati’s green spaces. We will begin by having a series of invasive removal workdays this fall and next spring. We will then begin planting native trees in the fall of 2019.

The first space we’re focusing on is Walnut Woods, a 10-acre property adjacent to Walnut Hills High School. We will be restoring it in collaboration with Walnut Hills High School, Cincinnati Parks, UC, the Evanston Community and more. This will be an ongoing project, and we could use your help!

Date: August 24th, 9am-12pm

Location: Walnut Woods, located adjacent to Walnut Hills High School (3250 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45207)

Parking: Park on Sulsar Street, and you’ll see the group gathered in front of the woods. The organizer, Susan, will have you sign in there. She’ll also have water & some snacks!

Join us for fun and informative seed saving workshop! Learn how to harvest, clean and store seeds from many of your favorite garden vegetables including tomatoes, peppers, melons, squash, beans and more! This lecture will include live demonstrations on many techniques as well as hands on learning opportunities for those in attendance. Ben will also be signing copies of his book, From Our Seeds and Their Keepers, after the workshop.

Ben Cohen is an author, herbalist, gardener, seed saver and wanderer.  He is also the founder of Michigan Seed Library, a community seed sharing initiative that has worked to establish nearly seventy seed library programs. Ben offers workshops and lectures across the country on the benefits of living closer to the land through seeds, herbs and locally grown food. He finds himself at home wherever his hands are in the soil, sowing the seeds of yesterday to reap the bountiful harvest of tomorrow.  To register, click here.

YP Learning Opportunity: Removing Invasive Species @ Civic Garden Center
Sep 5 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

We’ll gather at the Civic Garden Center while our horticulturist, Greg Torres, discusses the importance of removing invasive plants. He’ll show us what plants to look out for, provide techniques for how to effectively remove them, and list some great native plants we can replace them with. This event is especially helpful if you’ve been helping with, or would like to start helping with, our Treeforestation project. So join us and meet other YPs who care about the environment in our Greater Cincinnati region.
