Honey Bees

Three people in beekeeper suits examine a Langstroth beehive beside a yellow informational sign.

Pollinators play an important role in both our ecosystems and our food system. In addition to the variety of native pollinators you'll find at the Civic Garden Center, we also care for two honey beehives: a Langstroth hive and an observation hive.

Our Hives

A Langstroth beehive is made up of rectangular boxes that have removable frames in which the bees build their honeycombs. Ours was installed on our grounds in 2015.

Our observation beehive is located inside the Green Learning Station. This hive is in a plexiglass case, which allows observers (like you!) to peek behind the cloth cover and see what the inside of an active beehive looks like. The hive is connected to the outdoors so that the honey bees can come and go freely. It was installed in 2016 with funding from the BeeCause Project.
